Chapel of Our Lady of Carmen, Playa del Carmen

The Chapel of Our Lady of Carmen, known in Spanish as "Nuestra Señora del Carmen Chapel," stands as a historical and cultural emblem in Playa del Carmen. This modest white Catholic church owes its establishment to Father Juan Amezcua, who named it after the Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmen, a patron for the Carmelite Order.

Despite the growth, there was no permanent church structure until this chapel was built in the 1960s. Notably, local resources such as stones from Maya ruins, sand, and seawater were utilized in its construction, symbolizing a deep connection with the local environment and history.
